Ray Wales

Ray Wales, BVSc(1955), PhD(1961), DVSc(1970)
Ray joined the academic staff of the Department of Veterinary Physiology, Sydney University, in 1960. In 1966, he spent a sabbatical year at King Ranch Laboratory in Philodelphia to study the culture of the early embryo. On return to Sydney, he set up one of the first embryo culture labs in Australia and continued study of the physiology and biochemistry of the preimplantation embryo. He was also foundation treasurer of ASRB.
In 1975, he was appointed to the Chair of Physiology in the newly established Veterinary School at Murdoch University. There he continued to study the reaction of embryos to their environment until his retirement in 1996. A number of his former graduate students have played significant roles in early Human IVF development (eg Pat Quinn, Ian Pike, Rohini Ederisinghe).
