Richard Ivell

Until recently moving to take up a position as Head of Reproductive Endocrinology at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology in Germany, Professor Richard Ivell was Head of the School of Molecular and Biomedical Science at the University of Adelaide. Prior to that, he was for many years Director of the Institute for Hormone and Fertility Research at the University of Hamburg in Germany. From 2000 to 2006 he was Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Molecular Human Reproduction. Professor Ivell is a molecular endocrinologist with nearly 40 years of research experience. He currently has more than 280 publications, 7500 total career citations, and an H-index of 47. His specialist area is in the development of reproductive function in mammals and is currently involved in understanding how environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) impact on human and animal health through their influence on early (fetal) development. He has many years of experience researching on the molecular mechanisms of hormone action in males and females, particularly for the steroid hormones estradiol and testosterone, as well as for peptide hormones of the relaxin family. These and other peptide hormones comprise what are now referred to as the group of ‘neohormones,’ which are of especial interest in the context of reproductive health and aging.
